Our approach recognizes that every beginner has a unique starting point and different comfort levels around water. Some students are simply new to formal instruction, while others may have water anxiety or previous negative experiences. Our certified instructors are trained to work with all types of beginners, adapting their teaching methods to match individual needs and learning styles.
For our youngest beginners, the ISR program introduces babies and toddlers to water in a gentle, systematic way that builds survival skills while maintaining comfort and safety. The hotel environment provides a calm, professional atmosphere that helps both children and parents feel at ease during this important learning process.
Adult beginners receive patient, understanding instruction that addresses common concerns like breathing coordination, floating techniques, and stroke fundamentals. Our Adaptive Swim Lessons are specifically designed for beginners with diverse learning needs, providing specialized support and removing barriers that might exist in traditional swimming instruction. Our 1-to-1 lessons offer significant advantages for learning effectiveness and safety, allowing our certified instructors to focus entirely on your specific needs and adjust teaching methods, pace, and activities to match your unique learning style. With individualized instruction, there’s no waiting for turns, no pressure to keep up with other students, and no distractions from group dynamics.
For our ISR program, personalized instruction is essential because we’re teaching critical survival skills that require constant assessment and immediate response to each child’s reactions. Individual attention ensures proper technique development and maintains safety throughout the learning process in this controlled environment.
In Learn-to-Swim programs, personalized lessons allow instructors to identify and address specific challenges quickly, whether it’s breathing coordination, stroke mechanics, or building water confidence. Students receive immediate feedback and can work on problem areas without feeling self-conscious about their progress.
Our Adaptive Swim participants benefit from completely personalized coaching that focuses on their individual needs, learning styles, and comfort levels. The quiet, professional environment of the Hilton McLean provides an ideal setting for this specialized instruction.
The hotel setting enhances the personalized experience, providing a premium environment where instructors can focus entirely on each swimmer’s individual development without the distractions common in busier facilities.
Just bring a swimsuit, towel, and any personal goggles your swimmer prefers. We provide all other necessary equipment.
Pro Tip: Make sure the swimsuit fits well
For our ISR program, we sometimes have kids practice swimming in regular clothes to simulate what would happen if they fell in wearing their everyday outfit. We’ll give you advance notice when that’s needed, so you can bring an extra set of clothes.
This is one of the most common questions we receive, and the truth is that it varies by program, experience, your starting point, and the frequency of your lessons.
For our ISR students (ages 6 months to 4 years), we usually see them master their survival skills in about 5-7 weeks with daily lessons. That might sound fast, but remember, we’re talking about specific skills like floating and rolling over, not swimming laps. An 18-month-old learning to float is different from a 6 month old learning to float.
With Learn-to-Swim (ages 4 through adult), kids may go from scared to swimming across the pool in a couple of months. Some students take longer to feel truly comfortable. Adults might take longer initially because they have more fears to work through, but once they get it, they really get it.
Most people are surprised by how quickly they start seeing progress though. Usually within the first few weeks, there’s some kind of breakthrough— maybe finally putting their face in the water, or floating for the first time, or swimming a few strokes without panic.
The biggest indicator of progress is consistency. Regular attendance can make a huge difference in your ability to accelerate progress.
Safety is our top priority. Every instructor is CPR and water safety certified – that’s non-negotiable. Our ISR instructors get additional training because working with babies and toddlers requires different skills.
The one-on-one format is actually a huge safety advantage. When an instructor is working with just one student, they can watch for any signs of fatigue, stress, or discomfort that might get missed in a group setting. They know exactly where their student is at all times and can respond immediately if something doesn’t look right.
We conduct constant assessments throughout lessons – essentially checking in on how each swimmer is performing physically and emotionally. If someone seems tired, we adjust the lesson. If they’re having a rough day, we slow down. If they’re pushing too hard, we pull back.
The facility itself has all the standard safety features – proper depth markings, non-slip surfaces, good lighting. We work with the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner to make sure pool conditions are always optimal for safe swimming.
But here’s what really matters— safety is the foundation of everything we teach. Students learn
