Facility Features:
We welcome swimmers from age 4 through adults at our LA Fitness Lanham location. Our Learn-to-Swim program is designed for different developmental stages and skill levels, providing personalized instruction at this Maryland fitness facility.
Our Learn-to-Swim program serves ages 4 through adults, providing comprehensive 1-to-1 instruction that builds water confidence and develops proper stroke technique. Whether you’re a nervous 4-year-old taking their first swimming lessons or an adult who never learned to swim, this program adapts to your comfort level and learning pace.
For young learners, we create a supportive, encouraging atmosphere where children can gradually build confidence through age-appropriate activities and skill progression. Our instructors understand child development and use teaching methods that make learning fun and engaging while building essential water safety skills.
Adult learners receive patient instruction that addresses common concerns like breathing techniques, water safety, and overcoming fear-based barriers. Many adults come to us feeling self-conscious about learning to swim later in life, but our instructors create comfortable learning environments where adults can progress at their own pace.

Yes, we specialize in working with beginners of all ages and comfort levels at LA Fitness Lanham. Whether you’re 4 or 40, we have beginner-friendly classes designed to build water confidence and teach foundational swimming skills in this supportive environment.
Our approach recognizes that every beginner has a unique starting point and different comfort levels around water. Some students are simply new to formal instruction, while others may have water anxiety or previous negative experiences. Our certified instructors are trained to work with all types of beginners, adapting their teaching methods to match individual needs and learning styles.
For young beginners, we create a gentle, encouraging atmosphere where children can gradually build confidence through age-appropriate activities. Our instructors understand that some children may be fearful or hesitant, and they use proven techniques to help young swimmers feel safe and excited about learning in the water.
Adult beginners receive patient instruction that addresses common concerns like breathing coordination, floating techniques, and stroke fundamentals. We understand that learning to swim as an adult can feel vulnerable, so our instructors create supportive environments where adults can learn without feeling rushed or embarrassed.
Our 1-to-1 instruction format is particularly beneficial for beginners because it eliminates comparison with other students and allows for completely personalized pacing. Students can ask questions freely, repeat skills as needed, and progress at their own comfortable rate without any pressure.
The fitness facility environment provides consistent conditions that help nervous beginners feel more secure as they develop their water skills.
Yes, all our lessons are 1-to-1 instruction, ensuring personalized attention and faster progress for every swimmer. This individualized approach is fundamental to our teaching philosophy and takes full advantage of the facility’s pool environment.
Our 1-to-1 lessons offer significant advantages for learning effectiveness and safety, allowing our certified instructors to focus entirely on your specific needs and adjust teaching methods, pace, and activities to match your unique learning style. With individualized instruction, there’s no waiting for turns, no pressure to keep up with other students, and no distractions.
In our Learn-to-Swim programs, personalized lessons allow instructors to identify and address specific challenges quickly, whether it’s breathing coordination, stroke mechanics, or building water confidence. Students receive immediate feedback and can work on problem areas without feeling self-conscious about their progress.
Our instructors customize lesson plans based on each swimmer’s goals and learning style. Whether you want to learn basic water safety, develop competitive strokes, improve fitness through swimming, or overcome water fears, the 1-to-1 format allows for completely personalized curriculum and pacing.
The fitness facility setting provides a focused environment where instructors can concentrate entirely on each swimmer’s individual development without the distractions common in busier pool environments.
Just bring a swimsuit, towel, and any personal goggles your swimmer prefers. We provide all other necessary equipment.
Pro Tip: Make sure the swimsuit fits well
Towels should be large enough to wrap around the swimmer for warmth and comfort after lessons. The facility maintains comfortable temperatures year-round, but having adequate coverage helps maintain body temperature during the transition from pool to changing areas.
This is one of the most common questions we receive, and the truth is that it varies by program, experience, your starting point, and the frequency of your lessons.
With Learn-to-Swim (ages 4 through adult), kids may go from scared to swimming across the pool in a couple of months. Some students take longer to feel truly comfortable. Adults might take longer initially because they have more fears to work through, but once they get it, they really get it.
Most people are surprised by how quickly they start seeing progress though. Usually within the first few weeks, there’s some kind of breakthrough— maybe finally putting their face in the water, or floating for the first time, or swimming a few strokes without panic.
The biggest indicator of progress is consistency. Regular attendance can make a huge difference in your ability to accelerate progress.
Safety is our top priority. Every instructor is CPR and water safety certified – that’s non-negotiable. Our ISR instructors get additional training because working with babies and toddlers requires different skills.
The one-on-one format is actually a huge safety advantage. When an instructor is working with just one student, they can watch for any signs of fatigue, stress, or discomfort that might get missed in a group setting. They know exactly where their student is at all times and can respond immediately if something doesn’t look right.
We conduct constant assessments throughout lessons – essentially checking in on how each swimmer is performing physically and emotionally. If someone seems tired, we adjust the lesson. If they’re having a rough day, we slow down. If they’re pushing too hard, we pull back.
The facility itself has all the standard safety features – proper depth markings, non-slip surfaces, good lighting. We work with LA Fitness Lanham to make sure pool conditions are always optimal for safe swimming.
But here’s what really matters— safety is the foundation of everything we teach. Students learn
