Not Quite Team-Ready? Start With Swim Team Prep
Swim Team Prep bridges the gap between one-on-one Learn-to-Swim lessons and the Narwhals competitive team environment. It is designed for swimmers who have developed foundational swim skills but need more experience participating independently in a structured group practice.
Training Readiness Skills
- Group training skills and practice etiquette
- Lane awareness, mechanics, and pacing
- Interval-based swimming
- Independence and focus during practice.
Swimmers build the training habits and confidence they need to transition successfully to the Narwhals Swim Team. Placement is based on an evaluation with a WeAquatics coach.

What Narwhals Families Say
I really like WeAquatics! All the coaches are excellent, well-experienced, patient, and great with my child. My child has learned proper swimming techniques as well as important water safety skills. The customer service is also wonderful friendly, responsive, and professional. I highly recommend WeAquatics to any parent looking for quality swim instruction.
Meaza T.
Thank you, WeAquatics, for helping Joseph get back on track with his swimming skills. Joseph spent over a year at the Bethesda center and had the opportunity to work with several coaches who were all very patient with him.
Chalwe C.
I highly recommend WeAquatics! The 30-minute private lessons are well worth it. My daughter started learn-to-swim lessons when she was 4 years old - she was terrified of the water. Now she's almost 7 years old, loves to swim, and has been learning all 4 strokes and flip turns, thanks to her wonderful coaches at WeAquatics!

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the age requirements?
The Narwhals Team accepts swimmers from 4–18 years old. Most families find the ideal age to start competitive swim training falls between 6–12 years old. But plenty of 4–6 year olds who are ready for a challenge can certainly begin competing.
Is meet participation required?
No! Competition is entirely optional. Our focus is on training, technique, and skill development, helping each swimmer progress at their own pace and comfort level.
For families who’d like to explore upcoming events or see what meets look like, visit our Swim Meet Schedule.
What should swimmers bring to practice?
Proper swimsuit (one-piece for girls, jammers for boys), well-fitting goggles, swim cap, water bottle, and towel. A mesh bag helps keep everything organized.
Can my swimmer participate on another team?
Yes! We welcome swimmers looking for additional training opportunities.
Do coaches provide in-water coaching?
The Narwhals Swim Team focuses on competitive swimming skills and endurance, while Learn-to-Swim teaches basic water safety and stroke fundamentals.
What is the difference between Learn-to-Swim, Swim Team Prep, and Narwhals?
Learn-to-Swim provides personalized instruction in foundational swimming skills. Swim Team Prep helps swimmers apply those skills in a structured group-practice environment. Narwhals is the competitive team for swimmers who are ready for independent training, advanced skill development, and optional swim meets.
How will I know if my swimmer needs Swim Team Prep?
A WeAquatics coach will evaluate your swimmer’s technique, endurance, lane awareness, ability to follow group instructions, and independence during practice. The coach will then recommend Swim Team Prep or a Narwhals trial practice.
