Why Join the WeAquatics Adult Masters Program?
Swimming offers incredible benefits— especially for older adults. Let’s dive into some of the main reasons why you should consider joining our Adult Masters Program.
Improved Physical Health
Swimming is an excellent, low-impact, full-body workout that offers incredible health benefits without putting strain on your joints.
Regular swimming can:
- Improve cardiovascular health and lung capacity
- Build muscular strength and endurance
- Enhance flexibility and improve balance
- Help manage weight and boost metabolism
- Help prevent cognitive decline
For older adults, these benefits are particularly crucial. Annette Pinkston, a WeAquatics instructor, and Senior Games Swimmer, shares her journey after starting swimming in her 60s due to back issues. After dipping her toes into the world of swimming, she began to take it seriously, hiring a coach and training several days a week.
Annette’s sister, who’d already had one back surgery— and didn’t want another— also began swimming as part of her physical therapy routine, at first just walking in the water.
She watched Annette’s journey and was inspired to start swimming. “And now her coach says she’s an elite swimmer. It’s changed her figure. It’s changed her issues with her back.”
Mental Well–Being
The mental health benefits of swimming are equally impressive:
- Reduces stress and anxiety
- Improves mood through the release of endorphins
- Enhances cognitive function and memory
- Promotes better sleep quality
Annette describes the water as her ‘happy place,’ highlighting the emotional benefits of swimming.
Social Connection
Unlike our one-on-one Learn-to-Swim and Infant Swimming Resource™ classes, the Adult Masters Program is a group activity. You’ll swim— and maybe even compete— with other adults. Annette experienced this at a recent competition: “Everybody was cheering me on, and I’m struggling… and it wasn’t just me, but every single swimmer got the same (encouragement).”
This social connection is particularly valuable for older adults, providing opportunities for friendship and mutual encouragement that can combat feelings of isolation and loneliness.
Personal Growth and Achievement
Learning new skills or improving existing ones at any age is empowering. Our Adult Masters Program offers an encouraging environment where you can achieve personal goals with the support of an experienced coach and team.
Annette’s personal journey is a testament to this: At 67, she recently competed at the Virginia Senior Games, winning two gold medals in the 50-yard freestyle and 50-yard backstroke. As she says, “My goal really is, before I check out, I want to be able to say, I did this, I did that, I went here, I did that, I did this. This was a good ride.”
Safety & Enjoyment
For many adults, safety is a primary motivator for improving swim skills.
Strong swimming skills enhance not just your personal safety and that of those around you but also open up a world of opportunities.
Whether you’re supervising children at the pool, planning a beach vacation, or dreaming of aquatic adventures, our program gives you the confidence to fully enjoy water-based activities.
Adult Swimming Program Structure
The WeAquatics Adult Masters Program is designed to accommodate swimmers of different skill levels:
Group 1: For swimmers who can comfortably swim 50 meters of Freestyle and 50 meters of Backstroke.
Group 2: For more advanced swimmers who can swim 50 meters each of Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Freestyle.
Our practices focus on:
- Improving stroke mechanics
- Developing endurance
- Learning racing skills
- Enhancing overall fitness levels
We use tailored drills to promote correct stroke biomechanics, helping you to stay injury-free while developing strength and technique for racing or fitness.
Overcoming Hesitations
Many adults, especially seniors, may hesitate to join a swim program.
Common concerns include:
- Fear of water from past experiences
- Embarrassment about current skill level
- Worries about physical limitations
Annette addresses these concerns, “You need to come and check it out. You’re making excuses. You’re making assumptions about something you really don’t know. You can’t make a decision until you have all the information. So come get all the information, then you can make a proper decision.”
Our experienced instructors provide patient, personalized guidance tailored to each individual’s needs and goals.
