Frequently Asked Questions About WeAquatics Programs at Chinquapin Park Recreation Center

What age groups are eligible for swim classes at the Chinquapin Park Recreation Center in Alexandria, VA?

We serve all ages at our Chinquapin Park Recreation Center location. Our
programs are specifically designed for different developmental stages and
skill levels. The beauty of our programs is that we’ve designed each one
around what actually works for different ages.

For babies and toddlers, our Infant Swimming Resource™ (ISR) program
starting at 6 months up to 4 years old. These aren’t your typical “mommy and
me” splash sessions – we’re teaching real survival skills like floating and rollingover to breathe. A 10-month-old can learn to flip onto their back and float
until help arrives, which is pretty incredible when you think about it.

These babies are learning survival skills – how to float, how to breathe,
basically how to save themselves if they accidentally end up in water.

For children ages 4 and up through adults, our Learn-to-Swim program
provides personalized one-on-one instruction that builds water confidence
and develops proper stroke technique. Our certified, experienced instructors
work with adults who are learning to swim for the first time by helping them
become comfortable in the water, addressing their fears, placing their head
in the water, and beginning to learn proper swim skills and techniques, all
while providing a lot of empathy.

Pro Tip: Make sure the swimsuit fits well

For our ISR program, we sometimes have kids practice swimming in regular
clothes to simulate what would happen if they fell in wearing their everyday
outfit. We’ll give you advance notice when that’s needed, so you can bring an
extra set of clothes.

This is one of the most common questions we receive, and the truth is that it
varies by program, experience, your starting point, and the frequency of your
lessons.

For our ISR students (ages 6 months to 4 years), we usually see them master
their survival skills in about 5-7 weeks with daily lessons. That might sound
fast, but remember, we’re talking about specific skills like floating and rolling
over, not swimming laps. An 18-month-old learning to float is different from a
6 month old learning to float.

With Learn-to-Swim (ages 4 through adult), kids may go from scared to
swimming across the pool in a couple of months. Some students take longer
to feel truly comfortable. Adults might take longer initially because they have
more fears to work through, but once they get it, they really get it.

Most people are surprised by how quickly they start seeing progress though.
Usually within the first few weeks, there’s some kind of breakthrough—
maybe finally putting their face in the water, or floating for the first time, or
swimming a few strokes without panic.

The biggest indicator of progress is consistency. Regular attendance can
make a huge difference in your ability to accelerate progress.

Safety is our top priority. Every instructor is CPR and water safety certified –
that’s non-negotiable. Our ISR instructors get additional training because
working with babies and toddlers requires different skills.

The one-on-one format is actually a huge safety advantage. When an
instructor is working with just one student, they can watch for any signs of
fatigue, stress, or discomfort that might get missed in a group setting. They
know exactly where their student is at all times and can respond immediately
if something doesn’t look right.

We conduct constant assessments throughout lessons – essentially checking
in on how each swimmer is performing physically and emotionally. If
someone seems tired, we adjust the lesson. If they’re having a rough day, we
slow down. If they’re pushing too hard, we pull back.

The facility itself has all the standard safety features – proper depth markings,
non-slip surfaces, good lighting. We work with the Chinquapin Park staff to
make sure pool conditions are always optimal for safe swimming.

But here’s what really matters— safety is the foundation of everything we
teach. Students learn
